Ensemble Programs

Students enrolled in our private lesson program can choose to participate in the following ensembles:

Performance Class

 

During the quarter, students will participate in several rehearsals for their chosen class, and a performance showcasing their learned skills. Although some classes are run separately from the student's private lesson, other ensembles are integrated into the student's current lesson program by substituting the rehearsals for their weekly lesson. Please check with the Fox River Academy for specific dates and times.

 

Theory Classes

At no additional charge, students of the Fox River Academy can participate in our Theory Classes. Students are placed according to their skill level and musical experience. Curriculum ranges from basic concepts of music theory (ear training, music reading, notation) to more advanced concepts (key systems, chord theory, analysis). Theory classes are once a week and last 60 minutes, and the majority of assignments are done in class. Please check with the Fox River Academy for specific dates and times.

Theory Class

50-minute session: no additional fee (with enrollment)

 

Children's Theory Classes

Children's Theory (ages 5-6) – Tuesdays 1:00-1:50
Steady beat
2/4, 6/8 rhythms (whole, half, quarter, dotted quarter, eighth)
Musical alphabet
Steps/skips
Staff lines, moving around the staff
Introduction to solfege (do, re, mi, so, la)
This class is appropriate for students of varying lesson experience ages of 5-6. Activities include singing songs and playing games.

Beginning Theory I (ages 7-11) – Tuesdays 2:00-2:50
Steady Beat
2/4, 6/8 rhythms (whole, half, quarter, dotted quarter, eighth)
Staff lines/note reading
Introduction to solfege (major scale)
Intervals
This class is geared more towards beginners (<2 years lessons) or students who need work with note reading age 7-11. Strong focus on grand staff lines/spaces.

Beginning Theory II (ages (7-11) – Tuesdays 3:00-3:50
2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8 rhythms (whole, half, quarter, dotted quarter, eighth, sixteenth)
Staff lines/note reading
Solfege (major scale)
Key Signatures (C, G, F)
Intervals
Whole steps/Half steps
Sharps/Flats
This class is more advanced than Beginning Theory I. Geared toward students who already know grand staff lines/spaces, solfege (major scale), sixteenth notes and/or have been enrolled in theory class for more than two quarters. 

Teen Theory (ages 12+) – Tuesdays 4:00-4:50
Major/Minor/Chromatic scales
Key signatures
Circle of 5ths
Dictation – melodic/rhythmic
Solfege (do-major scale/la-minor scale)
This class is for students who are proficient in grand staff note reading and at least familiar with major scale construction ages 12+. Focus on key signatures and major/minor scales.

 

Evaluated Performance Recitals

Twice each year, students in our program participate in Evaluated Performance Recitals. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate their progress on their instrument, by preparing an exercise and one musical selection for a panel of teachers. Students also perform a short sight-reading example.

Private Music Instruction:

(piano, voice, flute, saxophone, clarinet, guitar, violin, viola, and drums)

$24/30-minute session

$36/45-minute session

$48/60-minute session

 

Multiple-Student Discount

There will be a multiple-student discount for families with two or more enrolled students. Families with two or three students enrolled will receive a $2/hour discount off their total tuition. Families with four or more students enrolled will receive a $4/hour discount on all family members. This discount also applies to students enrolled in multiple instruments.

 

Preschool Group Music Sessions:

"Miniature Musicians"

Our preschool music program is designed to teach in a fun, engaging way to children the six main concepts of music. Students will learn that Music is Pitch, Rhythm, Movement, Mood, and Music as a Language, both on a spoken and universal level. Exposure to these musical concepts provides a wonderful foundation for children that may develop an interest in studying a musical instrument as they grow. Our class size is minimal (4-6 per class), to allow optimal attention to your child's learning. For more information, please visit our Miniature Musicians Program page.

Private Piano Instruction:

Youth, Teenage, and Adult

Private piano sessions for Youth involve establishing a solid foundation in rhythm, pitch, ear training, and coordination/technique concepts, as well as piano geography and reading. Teenage/Adult sessions (along with advanced Youth) will branch into repertoire, improvisation, composition, and theory skills. Students will be exposed to a variety of musical styles and presented with various media of notation and listening.

Recommended session duration: Youth - 30/45 minute; Teenage and Adult - 45 minute/1 hour.

 

Private Voice Instruction:

Youth, Teenage, and Adult

Our voice program is designed to help advance the student in technique, musicality, theory, sight-reading, and repertoire. The material used in our sessions is specifically based on age and current advancement of the student.

Recommended session duration: Youth - 30/45 minute; Teenage and Adult - 45 minute/1hour.

 

Private Guitar Instruction:

Youth, Teenage, and Adult

Private guitar classes center around the proper development of hand position, posture, relaxation (for optimal technical execution), and rhythm/pitch. Students will learn to sight-read, develop their musical ear, and understand music theory in relation to their instrument.

Recommended session duration: Youth - 30/45 minute; Teenage and Adult - 45 minute/1 hour.

**Note: Due to the nature of the instrument, Youth students may need a special size guitar appropriate for their age and size. Please contact your instructor before obtaining an instrument for your class.

 

Private Bass Instruction:

Youth, Teenage, and Adult

Students will learn and expand on basic concepts of bass techniques, improvisation, ear-training, and explore various types of repertoire. Both upright and electric bass lessons are available.

Recommended session duration: Youth - 45 minute; Teenage and Adult - 45 minute/1 hour.

**Note: Due to the nature of the instrument, Youth students may need a special size bass appropriate for their age and size. Please contact your instructor before obtaining an instrument for your class.

 

Private Percussion Instruction:

Youth, Teenage, and Adult

Students advance in several areas of percussion studies (standard, jazz, latin, etc.) with attention and reinforcement of basic concepts (rudiments, sight-reading, ear training, improvisation). Snare, drum kit, and mallet percussion instruction available.

Recommended session duration: Youth - 30/45 minute; Teenage and Adult - 45 minute/1 hour.

 

Private Saxophone and Clarinet Instruction:

Youth, Teenage, and Adult

Recommended session duration: Youth - 30/45 minute; Teenage and Adult - 45 minute/1 hour.

 

Private Violin and Viola Instruction:

Our string program is designed to help advance the student in technique, musicality, theory, sight-reading, and repertoire. The material used in our sessions is specifically based on age and current advancement of the student.

Recommended session duration: Youth - 30/45 minute; Teenage and Adult - 45 minute/1 hour.

Private Harp Instruction:
Youth, Teenage, and Adult
Harp students will explore areas of technique and musicality, and work in areas of theory, sight-reading, and repertoire. We can recommend sources for harp rental or purchase prior to lessons. Please view the Harp Information page for frequently asked questions about the harp.

Sound Foundations  **New To Our Program**

Sound Foundations is a new class offered by the Fox River Academy in conjunction with Backthird Audio of Aurora. This class is designed for anyone that is interested in learning more about audio and recording technology. These classes will give you "hands on" recording experience, with a knowledgeable instructor to show you how it all works. Classes are for all students ages 14 and up. No prior knowledge necessary!

 

Sound Foundations I: Stage Sound

This class is a crash course in how to run a live sound system. Students will leave knowing how to design, set up, and run a PA system.

January 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th

Sound Foundations II: Studio Sound

This course in studio recording will teach you how to design, set up, and run a recording studio of almost any shape and size.

Art Classes

Students will learn fundamentals of drawing concepts, such as:

Class participants will explore the aforementioned concepts by using various art medium, such as various types of pencils, art markers, watercolor, and India Ink pens. There will be an additional fee for art supplies, specific to each class.

 

Art Information and Explorations In Silk:
Course Goals: Students will explore fundamentals of art by learning different artistic techniques and applying them in fun and exciting projects!

Art Class: Explorations In Silk
Teacher: Magi Hernandez
This class explores the art of painting on silk with silk dye and resist in the tradition of the French Serti method, and discuss other techniques such as Stop Flow and thickeners. Students will create a color wheel on silk, create various samples, and learn how to Shibori dye a scarf. 

Youth Class: Ages 7-11
Duration: 75 minutes (with 15 minutes clean-up time)

Time: 1:30 - 2:45 PM
